The Impossible Angle

Netherlands 2–0 Soviet Union · Olympiastadion, Munich

Van Basten volleyed from an angle with almost no goal to hit.

Gullit headed the Dutch in front from a corner routine on 32 minutes. Then Mühren's looping cross dropped on the right of the box and Van Basten hit it first time, top-spin over Dasayev and inside the far post. Van Breukelen saved Belanov's penalty after that, and the Netherlands' first major title came in a pale-orange adidas shirt, orange shorts and orange socks.
